it is indeed to keep from chafing.
the reason marathon runners do it is because with all that arm and leg motion and with their skin constantly rubbing against clothing the skin wears away and becomes tender and painful. vaseline forms a barrier.
and no, it's not really uncomfortable. =]

Uncomfortable? Nowhere near as uncomfortable as having skin burn from your arms and legs rubbing constantly!
You try running a mile or two and you will understand... and wish you had some vaseline!

To ease the friction of your thighs/arms rubbing when you run. Not applying Vaseline would be more uncomfortable.

I am a long distance swimmer..I cover my whole body in vaseline as a heat barrier..water is cold here...I also hope it will keep fluid in my system rather than loose it through pespiration...I expect that the long distance runners do it for the same reasons

Swimmers do this too... This keeps them from getting rashes and skin burns.... When you are running and you have areas where other skin touches, then the friction really makes it uncomfortable.
