It is very hard to tell before they have undergone their first molt. (4 months). You know when they have had their first molt because the black stripes on their face will not extend all the way to the cere. The cere is the wax like part above their beaks where the nostrils are. When they are under 4 months, both the male and female ceres are a purplish color. After 4 months, the male's cere turns a bright blue and the female's cere turns a pink/ brown/ tan color.

the male parakeet has a blue cere (the nostrils pretty much) and when the males are younger they have a light purpleish blue color... females on the other hand have dark brown ceres when they are mature and when they are younger they have white ceres... i know this because of the 11 i have...hope this helps!!!!

the male has kind of blue or drak color on its nose and a female has a lighter color than the male
