It all depends on if you want more than one kitten. With a male, you are guaranteed to have just one. If you get a female, unless you take proper precautions you will end up with a whole litter full after she gets pregnant, and then there is always the strange meowing when she is heat. I think a male is the way to go.

A kitten is a kitten. Most of them are pretty active when young, regardless of breed and gender. Some are a little more docile as kittens than others, just like humans have different temperaments.

If they aren't feral, you wouldn't need to "tame" them, just teach them with a squirt bottle what is a "no no" and a treat when they do a good behavior. Verbal praise and a sharp NO should go with the treat or the spray bottle of water. Lots of stroking is also good for letting them know you appreciate them. Ear and chin scratching is also a way of letting them know you like them.

As for smartness, most cats are smarter than humans. How else can you explain that they get to lay around napping all day, get fed for doing nothing, get us to clean their litter box and reward us with their attention when it suits them? Once they are neutered, they are about the same regardless of gender. It's what you work at teaching them that makes the difference in "smartness".

The only cat we have now is a stray cat that our dog found as a kitten. The dog adopted the kitten, it has never been around any other animals and is as sharp as a tack. It's a neutered female and learned all of the commands that we were teaching the dog when it went to obedience training. So, when I tell it "off", it knows exactly what to do--and I have yet to give it a treat, so the lesson here is to be consistant,
and remember when training, repetition is the best teacher.

There isn't a big difference, it just depends on the kitten's personality. I would say males are more cuddly and females don't want to be pet as much in general. They are both easily tamed and very smart. I wanted to get one female kitten. I went to the breeders house and ended up getting two males and they are great. Just pick out a kitten that you like, regardless of sex. Have fun with your new kitty!! :)

Well both male and female cats can spray when adults even when fixed. Males do alot more. So I would say a female would be best. I also think that they are more gentle and docile then males. On terms of smartness. I think that totally depends on the cat and not the gender. They all have different personalities and smarts. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new kitty!

I have two female cats, and although I love them more than anything, sometimes they're a little bitchy. I've had male cats before, and they're little lovers. (At least the ones I had were, some can be aggressive.) The boys I used to have were so friendly and always wanted to be around me and sit on my lap. They were big babies. The females seem to be more bossy and only want attention on their terms. Again, my kitties are sweet girls but they have their snotty moments. EVERY cat is different though. Just my experience.

Males can spray and can be messier on houses, but females have alot of attitude... I know go figure. I have found that any cat given alot of attention and treated well can be very loving and want lots of attention. I would suggest you definately get it spayed when you can too. That helps calm them done too. I have 2 girl cats and one boy cat. He is my lap cat, he always wants to sit on mom. But I have a lap ferret too and she always wins out. We have 5 ferrets, 3 cats, dog and bunny here. I think female cats are smarter, but that also means they are sneakier too... It is a trade off. With love and time, any cat can he a wonderful pet. Make sure you keep it inside so it can bond well with you and maybe even get it spayed before you let it out if you are in an area to do so. Good luck.

There is no difference in the smarts category....however, USUALLY males are more affectionate than females (this only applies if they are neutered). I personally have a female that is the most affectionate cat I have ever had, but that is not usually the norm!

my male cat was an angel, we rescued him, an 8yr old tabby named MeowMeow, an outdoor cat, he loved everyone, if someone on the street walked by he would roll on his belly and rub against your leg and loved being pet! the gender duznt matter, if they have a good tempermant and personality, males and females can have that and be smart. if you have a boy and a girl kid for example, the boy isnt smarter than the girl just because he is a boy you know? its the same with animals :)

A male cat is more loving. I don't think there is much difference in intellegence or how easily tamed.

A female can be more stand offish........

I would suggest going with a female cat. They are cuter, they seem to be sweeter, and they are EXTREAMLY intelligent, though all cats in general are smart. Also, with male cats, there is a risk of bladder infections. I had a male cat who almost died because he got a blockage, and could not urinate. Also, male cats spray, and they can be moody.
