The problem is that many don't follow the teachings of the religion they profess. That and they honestly can't agree among themselves what it is they are supposed to follow. There are so many sects of Christianity and each claims a different truth.

I think the debate between true and untrue Christians comes in with the way people follow Christ. I often see people being very unfair and bias when criticizing people. For example, one of the biggest quarrels in society (in my opinion) is "Christians vs. Gays". Personally, I think that homosexuality is a sin, but as a Christian I must also remember that in the eyes of God....sin is sin. I cannot choose to persecute someone because of my beliefs. All sins will be judged equally so before I get on my pedestal and start pointing the finger at others...I need to make sure that my own soul is clear of lying, stealing, lust, etc.
As a Christian our responsibility is to share the message of God's love and plan for redemption through Jesus. Convicting someones heart of their sin is the Holy Spirit's job.

A true christian would have to be first of all a jew, second of all 2000 years old, and know and understand the teachings of Christ, sicne the original documents do not remain. It would be nice of this person to instruct the 'christians' of the world today on their own religion.

A "true Christian" does the will of God. Jesus said not all that say master I have done many miracles in your name etc. He (Jesus) will say depart from me I never knew you. Many Self proclaiming Christians think they are able to judge others. However, the bible clearly states that is Jesus job. I would suggest reading your bible. That way no one can confuse or mislead you. Also, to follow christ, that is to do God's will. After, Christ said, everything I say, everything I do my Father told me to.

A true Christian is one who does the work of the Lord. He loves his neighbors, he does not judge, he helps those that need it, he accepts God's will.
An untrue Christian is one that takes advantage of things to gain for himself or to make others think he is that when he is not...otherwise known as a hypocrite.

A true Christian believes in God with all their heart, with all their soul, and with all their mind no matter what emotion they're in & it is 24/7.
And they do everything & live for Him.
And untrue Christian says they are but does not do anything about it.

I'm telling you they make up the rules as they go. Look at Ted Haggard. Leader of a mega-church. Lunches with the President. An all around Godly guy. Then it comes out that he's a meth user and possibly gay. Immediately, he was never a "True Christian."
They're all hypocrites.

A Christian is a Christian because he or she trusts God through Jesus Christ. They can be immoral in many ways, so it's not their perfection that makes them Christian, but their ability to trust God. The Bible is used because it tells us what to trust Him about.
EDIT:
Also, it is promised in the Bible that the Holy Spirit comes to dwell in such a person. The change you MIGHT see in that truster of God is because the Spirit of God changes people. It makes them different than they were.
