I mean, while buying groceries, test driving a car, shopping for a guitar...have you been asked if you're a Christian?

If so, how did that go for you?

I was just asked point-blank "Are you folks Christians?" while test driving a car.

A car salesman asked me that once, yes. It was great the way he waited until we were in the car and his boss couldn't overhear. At that point, I took the car back to the lot. He asked why, and I told him I was at a car dealership, not church, and it was none of his business. I also told him I was offended that he'd asked. I left the dealership. I then contacted the owner and told him about the salesman's question, and I insisted on a reprimand. It was grossly unprofessional behavior. I didn't want the salesman to lose his job, just to keep his screwball beliefs to himself. I also made sure the dealer knew that I still intended to buy that brand of car, but at another dealership, one not staffed by religious fanatics.
IMHO, it's bad for business, and nosy beyond belief, but it also reflects the arrogance of many of the born-again, thinking it's OK to just start spouting off with their fairy tales, regardless of the circumstances. In this case, it was especially dangerous, because I was trying to concentrate on controlling an unfamiliar vehicle, and he wanted to talk about Jeeeeesus.

I was asked by a landlord when viewing a townhouse I was thinking of renting, but that's the only time, not quite the same thing. I've never been asked about religion by a salesperson. Just door-to-door evangelists, co-workers, friends, etc. It might be because I'm in Canada.

People who do this know they're out of line. If you don't answer, they'll say that themselves, something like, "Oh, wait, that's too personal, forget I asked" at which point you say, "OK". I've found that dead silence is the best answer to that question, because it's really none of their business.

This is one of those questions where context is key.

When I signed a contract for my apartment, I was asked point blank what my religion is. The landlady has the names, addresses, and worship times for several denominations and wanted to make sure I knew when and where to go.

A door-to-door magazine salesman asked me if I'm Christian. It was strange for me because about 20 seconds after I said I'm an atheist he asked me if I have ever let a black man "peform oral sex" on me.

The way it worked out is I screamed for my (Jamaican aka black) boyfriend to come to the door. Probably needless, but *still*. The whole experience was completely unnecessary.

If I were the owner of the car dealership, and learned that, I'd have FIRED that salesman on the spot. "Do not pass 'GO,' and do not collect $200. Just LEAVE!!"

Yup, and I've responded, "No, I'm a witch." that usually scares them so much they just shut up at that point... or, like your car salesman, they stumble all over themselves trying to backtrack from that point.

Well I wasn't on a Religious Question and Answer section of the Internet. --- Why do you keep bashing Christians? Are you under a conviction by God to have your soul saved?

Please prove that a salesman told you that. If you don't have proof, why should anyone believe you?

I know it has happened to me before, but I don't remember when or where. Damn it.

That's creepy though. What'd you say?
