I am seeking information about a Private Peter Mangan who was de-mobbed in 1945. I believe he served in the Staffs during World War 2. Can anyone shed any light on him or what became of him please?

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, Germane, but until 1959 (when they were amalgamated) there used to be a North Staffordshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's) and a South Staffordshire Regiment.

If you have a photograph of the cap badge that the person is wearing, you'll be able to see which Regiment he served with.

In the North Staffordshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's), there will be three plumes (feathers) sticking upwards out of the crown. In the South Staffordshire Regiment, these are not present. In the modern day Staffordshire Regiment (since 1959) the two have become amalgamated. (Examples can be seen in the first few urls given below.)

If you're intent on finding out more information about Private Mangan, you could, initially, write to the Staffordshire Regiment Museum and ask their advice on tracing someone. They will, undoubtedly, put you in touch with the Department of Army Service Records ... the final url below. (You'll need to provide as much detail, such as Army service number, rank, full name, date of birth, Regiment(s) served with, for you to have any chance of a successful search.)

Best of luck.

The key to finding army personnel is there Number,
if you have any on these then you should have it

Pay Book

Discharge Papers

Medals ( the number is on the rim of some Medals )

Also unless you are the next of kin then the MOD will not help
