I absolutely believe it's the latter. Humans are one of the few animals (far as we can ascertain to date) aware of their own mortality. This is a pretty unsettling realization for many, and the primary motivation for creating soothing mythologies (why else would such divergent belief systems all include an afterlife component?). Combine that with explanations for strange, sometimes threatening natural phenomena, and the convenient ability to control masses, and whala!, we have the mass delusion that is organized religion.
There are several books that try to tackle the topic, but i can only recall one right now: "The God Part of the Brain" which posits that we're biologically programed to believe in a higher power, etc. If you look that one up on Amazon, I'm sure you'll find the more recent additions as well.
Let's hope sanity prevails and we can one day put an end to all the delusion and violence committed in the name of religion.
Addendum: I stand corrected. Apparently it's the other way around, cuz some book written BY MEN says so on page one. Silly me. How could I have failed to see this inconvtrovertable trurth?? 'Tards.

This movie explains why Horus, Attis, Krishna, Dionysus, Mithra and dozens of other saviors all had 12 desciples, were born on or around Dec 25th with a bright star in the east, were adorned by 3 kings, performed miracles, were crucified and ressurected 3 days later.
It starts out a little slowly, but stay with it and after the first 8 minutes or so, it picks up steam.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was waste and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep: and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
Gen 1:1-2 (ASV)
Need not read any further than that.

Have you been reading the inside of Jethro Tull's Aqualung album? I do not believe a true answer (or at least a satisfying one) will be found here as you have two sides neither listening to the other but all sure they are right.

You sound like Karl Marx. I believe he said something similar. Not very original.
One God is true, the rest were created by man.

I believe Man created God...and for the exact reasons you listed in your question. And also as a form or control.

Man created God. We need someone to believe in who can do things that we only wish we could. And we need to believe that there are higher powers at work who control us because we need something to explain things that happen in our daily lives. Also, there is no proof that God exists, so how do you know he's real.

Man created God because if they believe that everything we do is part of some bigger picture overseen by some all-powerful being, then no one truly has to claim responsibility for their own actions
