Deployments are tricky. If his orders say 179 days, that is how long they (your husband's unit) expect to be deployed. That of course could change, he could come home early, or right at the 179 day mark, or he may be extended. It all depends on how things are going at the time and on the needs of the military.

You're lucky that he is only going to be gone for 6 months. My husband deployed a week ago and he will be home in 474 days!!! Good luck to you!!

Generally, our guys deploy for 4 months at a time, although some career fields do 6 months. Every time hubby brought home his orders they always stated 179 days. It's just common practice. He was extended one time, but most of the time it was just his 120 days, give or take a week.
Check with him and ask him how long he is deploying for.

Also, most squadrons will do a predeployment meeting for the folks going and their spouses. It lets the spouses in on the info they need to know, first hand, and it gives them a chance to meet some people they may need to know... the Commander, the First Sgt., and the Key Spouse.

Take advantage of the Key Spouse program if your squadron is using it. You should receive a phone call at least once a month from this person, checking on you and making sure you are ok. Be honest with them, that's what we are there for!! Most KS have been there and done that, and can help you through rough times. And if we don't know the answers we'll find someone who does!

It won't be easy, the first deployment isn't, but rely on those around you and remember.. you're part of the AF Family and family takes care of its own.
Hugs!

Edit: If others from his shop are gone 4 months, then he probably is as well. But, get the facts.... check with the First Sgt. or his flight chief. If you don't know who they are, call his orderly room, or call his shop and ask for their names & numbers. Don't rely on hearsay or rumor... get it straight from the folks who know.

I have been active Navy for 6 years, when you go on deployment you have the process you go on before the deployment, then the process after the deployment, so it might and probably be more than just 179 days till you see him. It may also be that he could get extended with the approval of the Secertary of the Air Force (SECAF). Stay strong, all military wives have to be, I tell my wife that shes different from most women, most women cant handle a military man.

It says 179 days because federal travel regulations limit TDY to 180 days. For longer than 180 days, it requires a higher level of approval. So they issue the initial TDY with the lower level of approval, then if they require an extension, they go through the process of approving an extension.

Any deployment, in war or peacetime can be extended by anyone in the upper chain of command. Be it the commanding general, the service secertary or the President. During WWII people were in the service "for the duration." That meant you were in until you died, were tooinjured to continue to fight or the war ended. back then, most people were deployed for two or more years before the saw the USA again. When the war ended, that's where all the Baby Boomers came from, and why.

His deployment is for 179 days, all it is saying is they could extend it another 179 days if they need to for any reason, don't be suprised if it gets extended a little they usually do that

It depends on his position of authority, If he is inexpendible then most likely they will extend him but not likely that will happn otherwise he is coming home. He will be able to know about half way thrrough the deployment.

6 months unless the mission exceeds that then he can be made to stay, highly unlikely though as the AF does a good job of rotating their people
