Clumping is going to be the best choice if you're going to be scooping. The best kind overall is something like the natural wheat litter, or a feline pine type as they don't contain any dusty materials or fillers, and are excellent at masking scent. The truth is you can keep any litter from getting too smelly by cleaning it regularly. I have automated boxes so it scoops every time my cats go, but scooping it daily would suffice. The best thing I know for regular litter is the tidy cats scoop for small spaces. It has a light scent to it, which will mask any additional odors left after scooping. You'll also want to do a litter change at least every 2-3 weeks, and each week you'll want to add a little extra litter to replace the stuff you've scooped out.
Good luck with your new baby!

Fresh Step Clumping Litter is the best. Not the kind with crystals though. A lot of cats I know do not like to step on the crystals because it bothers their feet.
Any kind is fine but make sure they don't eat it. Your cat should have starting using the box at about 5 wks old so wherever she was she had to have been doing that. Or she may use the leaves if she was an outside cat.

Tidy Cat clumping cat litter. You can get the immediate odor control or the long lasting odor control. I've used regular cat litter before and it was a mess. Get any kind that clumps and keep the box scooped out. That way you shouldn't have to clean the darn thing very often if at all. Avoid messing with the cat litter if you are pregnant.

If I recall correctly form the last batch of inside kittens we had, there is a special cat litter just for kittens. I can't remember what it was though.
Cats each have their own preference. Just like humans are picky about toilet paper. Some kinds too soft, some too hard, some too itchy... your cats preferences will change over time, and more than likely you'll need to change brands several times. Eventually your cat will find one she is happy with and probably stick with it. Just don't be afraid to experiment with litters as she grows. You'll know if she likes a littler or not..

I just use a scoopable litter such as Cat's Pride, and have since my kitties were kittens. The only exception was when I had to use shredded newspaper after they were fixed.
I've never heard of a litter just for kittens either.

When I first got my cat (he was three months old), I got Fresh Step. It's scoopable, it doesn't stink, and it keeps everything else smelling good, as far as not letting the smell out. Plus, it's easily scoopable, and it's fairly cheap. You can get a 24 pound container for about eight or nine dollars at a grocery store.
Also, you don't need to use a whole bunch for one pan. Usually just an inch or two deep, and it's fine for quite a while. A week or two, at least. But you'd still scoop everything out daily.
So! I'd recommend Fresh Step.

Kitty litter is more for your convenience than the cats. You gotta clean it. Try a brand that clumps. If the kittens use it then you're all set.

Special Kitty scoopable litter from Wal-Mart always works great. Not messy or smelly either. Start now and continue on as she grows into a cat.

I am unaware of a litter just for kittens. I like the scoopable kind because it lasts longer if you clean every day or every other day. I use Scoop Away for my 2 babies.
