I am 11 yrs old, 5th grade, going into 6th and all my friends have a cell phone except Lexi, who's getting 1 this January for her 12th B-day. What do you think???? Is it unfair?

I got one when I was 12 and now I'm 15, you probably won't need one. I didn't start really using one until this year. It's up to you, talk to your parents about it and see what they think.

I don't think it's a matter of fair or unfair. Do you have a job so you can pay the monthly charges? Cel phone bills add up quickly, and depending upon your parents' finances, it might be too expensive.

I understand that there is a convenience and sometimes a safety issue with having your own cel phone. But in not having a cel phone, doesn't make you a bad person and if your friends look down on you because you aren't throwing $30+ out the window every month just to carry around a little phone, then they have bigger issues than you have phones.

And finally, just to make complete sure that I sound like my parents - I didn't have a cel phone as a young person and I survived.

I got one for my son when he turned 12. The reason why? He was going into 7th grade, and he got out of school half an hour before I got off work. I felt he needed a way to communicate with me until I got there. He is also a straight A student. Cell phones cost money and you need to demonstrate responsibility first. Life isn't fair, and cell phones aren't a necessity. Show your parents you are responsible by doing small jobs to earn money and offer to share the expense.

Why do you need a cell? Is it to contact your parents in case of emergency? Or is it to talk to your friends at all hours of the night? My children, ages 8 and 11, have a cell phone but for emergencies only. They have not called anyone because I can check it on the phone statement. I take their phones at night and keep them in my room. They stay there until they go someplace where there will not be a phone or if we go shopping. They know they can use it if they were to get lost, kidnapped, or caught in the middle of a situation where they had no way out. Hang in there. You need to build trust for your parents.

i'm 11 and have one. (i'm in 6th grade.) i only have it for safety reasons. you should tell your parents why it's a good idea for you to have one and then offer to pay like half the bills. it's not that unfair if all you wanna do is text your friends because you can just talk to them for that.

are you driving.... no
do you have kids.... no
do you have a job your on call for... no
So why do you need a cell phone? Just so you can talk to all your friends. Not a good enough reason. You can wait

I am 21 and I think it is stupid till you are at least in high school. There is no need for one till then and at most all kids that age need is a prepaid ( for emergency's only)

Who told you life was fair? Get a job and pay for your own cellphone if you really want one.
