Ok.. lets do the worst case scenario..

.. You steal a sign and eventually are caught

Public Issues:

1) Theft of public property.. prob. a misdemeanor unless you steal a fancy sign and it will cost over $500 to replace it. Then its a felony.

2) Hefty fine.. PLUS the cost of replacing or remounting the sign.

3) Possible jail time.. (see the above answers for more details)

4) Criminal record (either way). If it is a felony then you also loose some of your rights as a citizen.

Thats about it on the public side

PRIVATE SIDE

You steal that sign and there is a terrible accident because of it

1) You will be sued by the survivors or by the heirs. If you are a minor, your parents will be sued. This a lawsuit for damages: Cars, personal property, injuries, pain and suffering, etc... Judgements here are made with dollars not jail time..... think in terms of a TON of money.

2) After you give up what you own, your parents sell the house and give up 50% of their paycheck for a long time, you may STILL owe a lot of money. So once you turn 18 (or 21 as the case may be) YOU will get to start adding to that judgement.

3) For a loooonng time you will carry the stigma of .. there goes that kid that stole a sign and killed someone or something like that.

PERSONAL

You will have to come to terms with how you lacked the foresight to see the potential harm from such a stupid act.

............................

ok.. got the picture.. all actions have reactions. Consider those before you do something.

.

2) If

Could be bad! Some kids stole a stop sign in my city a few years ago and it caused a wreck where some people died. The community made a strong effort to find out who stole the sign. They were found, caught, charged, tried in court and went to jail.

In Canada you can be charged with theft and if it results in an accident (due to a stop sign theft), you can be charged with causing a common nuissance or perhaps criminal negligence causing death/bodily harm.

If it's just a "Elm Street West" kind of sign, then theft.

If you want a sign just talk to the highway department and see if you can purchase one. Look online, maybe you can find a legitimate reproduction, meaning new signs that are not stolen. Maybe even check with ebay.
