I tried using wax paper instead of parchment paper once and it started to melt, and smoke. Try using aluminum foil instead, if you don't have time to get parchment paper.

Parchment paper can be used to line cookie sheets for baking cookies and pastries. Wax paper should not be used for lining cookie sheets for baking cookies or when it may be exposed. Wax paper cannot take the heat of the oven and will smoke. Both wax paper and parchment paper can be used for lining cake pans for baking cakes. Because the cake batter completely covers the wax paper, the wax paper will not smoke. Parchment paper is used to make the baking item non-stick. I would just spray the pan with Pam and forgo the use of the wax paper. It's better to be safe than sorry.

NO!!! Wax paper will smoke up the place and will melt into the cookies...not good eats! Spray your cookie sheet with PAM or some other non-stick product if you can't get out to buy parchment paper. Just between you and me, plain old grocery bags work well if cut open. Get rid of the bottom though, you don't want that nasty glue anywhere near your oven or food.

If it's for baking, don't substitute wax paper. Wax paper is coated with paraffin and will smoke in the oven.
I just bake cookies on a cookie sheet. Parchment paper isn't really necessary.

Don't use wax paper! I tried that same substitution years ago and it burned and almost caught on fire in the oven! Foil is your best bet if you don't have a non-stick pan anymore.
