A lot would depend on where you are going to work as to what to recommend as being close to Torrance. I live in Long Beach, not too far from Torrance. I happen to live on the beach so the area is really wonderful, safe and lots to do. However, there are areas of Long Beach I would not go to so again, it all depends on the area of the city you locate in.
If I had children, I would also try and find a good school and school system which would have a lot to do about where I would move.
Like any place, there are good and bad areas. I can say for certain that the closer you get to the ocean the better the area because the higher the rents and prices to own a home.
It would help to know more information about you and your move to advise you where to look. Age, ethnicity, where you are working, what your budget is for housing, etc.

"Bad place" usually goes hand in hand with lower income area. If you can afford to buy/rent in a middle income area, you're not going to have any problems. Most of Torrance fits the middle-and up bracket.
If your income puts you in a "less desirable" area - check the neighborhood out before making a decision (a local cop can tell you where the problem areas are). Often a few blocks one way or the other can make a huge difference.
I've been pretty much everywhere in Torrance, and the only area that seemed sketchy was the east side, near the 110 freeway.

I have lived and worked in Torrance for over 35 years. The only bad part is east Torrance. West, South and North Torrance are really nice areas. Call the Daily Breeze and have a copy of their paper sent to you with all the rentals in the paper. 310 540-5511. Or go online at: www.dailybreeze.com 80% of Torrance is beautiful.

Torrance is good, just stay away from Compton, Long Beach, Gardena, and San Pedro- GANG territory big time Go check out the Comedy Club in Hermosa Beach, next door almost to Torrance- also visit Palos Verdes and Manhatten Beach

i agree with copestir - its diverse and a city of contrasts. In my opinion, that's a good thing (not saying that copestir thinks its a bad thing, im just saying).
I dont know any one who worries about their safety in Torrance of all places. I am sure like most cities it has its good and bad, but most of what I've seen is good. And it's near upscale beach cities. It's not a bad place to be.

If you have the cash, move to adjacent Palos Verdes. But if you're so worried about your safety stay wherever the hell you are.
