Many Middle-Eastern countries that have primarily muslim citizens are very civilized due to high income from exporting oil and other fossil fuels. To believe that every muslim country in the world is a third world country is foolish and wrong.

Mostly ignorance {lack of formal education} For you folks that think Saudis and Turks are rich, get out in the smaller towns. Never have I seen such a contrast between haves and have nots. Riches in the hands of a few does not mean a country is wealthy. I have been going to that part of the world for over 40 years, and have seen little change, with the exception of Turkey which has made enormons improvement. Why? It is a secular country with solid educational opportunities.

If you notice, developed countries are developed because of their financial state & advance in technology.
Muslim as a religion, if I remember correctly, teaches living life without all these material things. Some Muslims take this too seriously and despise Western culture (capitalism) for this.
But not all Muslim countries are third world countries.

Not all, Morocco, Saudi Arabia (one of the richest countries in the world) Turkey: definitively no third world countries!
You only hear from poor countries, because there is where the violences appear. But this is more because those people are poor and uneducated (and easy to be influenced), not because they are Muslims.

They are classified as third world because third world really means not alligned with the US (1st world) or USSR (2nd world) during the cold war.
Some have thought it to mean economically but those are actually different designations. And if you meant this you would be wrong anyway:
United Arab Emerates ranks 5th in the world in income per captia above the US.
Quatar ranks the same as the European Union on a whole.
Bahrain, Brunei, Kuwait, all rank in the same range or above Greece and Spain

Many Islamic nations are poor and have a great disproportion of wealth among citizens is because of Islam itself. If approximately half of the population (women) isn't allowed to contribute, how much can it achieve? The price for oil wagered by the US and other nations is set to intentionally keep Muslim nations from thriving. The despot leaders of these nations suck their resources dry to please the global market and to line their own pockets. All this while the "commoners" go without. While leadership is spending money on Learjet's and underage prostitutes, the people go desolate. This angers them and helps to fuel terrorism with ready recruits. Instead of blaming their leadership and backward religious doctrine they blame the other half of the problem. People like bin Laden use this anger for their own ends. This is world is centered upon greed and lust. So long as it is, we'll always have the problems we have.

Because they are under the control of a religion. Religions kill innovation, and destroy economies. Notice that it was only after religion was forced out of Government that Europe or the USA started to make serious economic progress. Things are starting to swing back though, Religion has become extremely popular in the USA and education has taken major hits. Mexico now graduates more engineers in a year than America does. China has more gifted students than the USA has students. AS religion has been increasing in the USA its ability to compete internationally has been declining. In spite of what the Free Marketeers want to tell you competitiveness is not terrible dependant on having low wages. Education, innovation and technological prowess matter much more.

Choice! They choose to war rather than better their situation. Technology, comfort, peace, relaxation, enjoyment, forgiveness, love, understanding, as well as many other words are not in their vocabulary, nor in their hearts, minds, souls, nor are they goals or desires of the people of those lands. These things are not important for most of them. Keep in mind, there was no Third World about Kuwait at one time.

For the same reasons the south american countries are third world countries. Its because of that little one acre plot in Italy. Any country that is dominated by a religion is held back and lacks progress. Just look at 'em.
