sleeping it has been suggested must be understood as the brain's attempt to make time for things like processing of information collected during waking hours and is a necessary physiological function. studies have shown that people who attempt to stay awake for long periods exibit the brainwave patterns of people who are asleep . they may also halucinate which has been described as the brain forcing the processing of information in this case as dreaming with your eyes open . therefore it could be suggested that people who have attemped to stay awake for long periods may have appeared to be awake but were actually physiologically asleep with their eyes open.

its a protective mechanism like with blinking when somehitng get near your eyes. while u r sleep your awareness is down. so some thing could happen while u r sleep to ruin your eyes.
so we sleep w/ our eyes closed to protect our eyes w/ eyelids.

i think i said it right i learned it in biology last yr.

too much stimulation for the brain, it can't relax.
theoretically we shouldn't need to sleep, we should just be able to eat something, produce more energy and carry on! scientists seem to think that sleeping is a rest for the brain, so if it's over stimulated it can't rest.
