try get him into a habit of washing his mouth after a meal, also every morning and afternoon and see if his breath will change the smells

my daughter is the same she is 4 and started reception this year.
i think is the school dinners
because she reeks of garlic when she comes home from school and sometimes a few days on it still there

Garlic is added to quite alot of foods, particularly sauces. check the labels of what he's been eating, maybe this is the cause.

what about under arms? same smell? probably garlic- is there access to DMSO ? dimethyl sulfoxide [solvent]. it has a garlic smell.

He might have gingivitis or halitosis, try getting him to use corsodil mouthwash for a few days to see if that helps.
