do the glass test on the rash, if it shoots up to 40 again take him straight to hospital immediately. you can look at the nhs direct website for help if you need it but a temp above 40 is an emergancy! you can give infant paracetamol and infant ibuprofen at the same time to keep his fever down, if you need to sit him in a bath of cold water, keep that fever down. get as many opinions as you like from the doctors, if your not happy let them know. its probably just a viral infection but keep a close eye on him, take his temperature evry 15 minutes or so and keep a record of the time and temperature and note any symptoms that develop, that way you have a record for the doctors cos thats what they would do if they admitted him for observation. give him plenty of cold drinks too!

If he's acting fine and doesn't seem to be in pain - he's eating, drinking, sleeping, playing relatively normally, (it's okay if he naps more than normal or just doesn't want to do much) you can let the fever go up to a full five days with no other visible symptoms. Fever is our friend - it's the body's first line of defense against an invader (a germ) and SOMETIMES all that's needed to get rid of it. Unless he's uncomfortable, you don't need to give him anything to supress the fever just to supress the fever. (If he's miserable, then definitely give him something!) Just dress him lightweight and make sure he's got LOTS of cool fluids to drink. (Ice pops, sherbet, and jello all count too - and he might find those interesting.) Run him a lukewarm bath and give him some tub toys to play with.

BTW - if you're giving something for the fever, it more than likely will not return totally to normal - as long as it comes down a degree or two, that's fine.

If the fever goes five days with nothing else visible, he needs to see his regular doctor, sooner if he appears to be in pain or refuses to drink or isn't urinating.

I would watch hid fever for the night and let the medicine work, you can give him a lukewarm bath and some tylenol. Keep him lightly dressed, just a diaper or a onesie and if his fever doesn't break by the late morning take him in again, but you should give the medicine time to work.

Sounds like roseola. Rash and fever. Contagious. Go to doc or er.

Give him a dose of tylenol and see if the temp goes down. Then take him to his pediatricin tomorrow.

Bluebella has great suggestions. The only other thing I would add is cool clothes around his head. That will help protect his head from the high temperatures. I hope your little guy is feeling better soon!
