My beagle is mix with something else because he body is a bit bigger than a normal beagle He weighs about 36 lbs too.

I have been buying Ol'Roys because the first ingredient is NOT corn, as it is the 2nd ingredient.

I read about how certain foods are better for certain dogs. Help me and let me know which dog is best for my dog. I have no kids, so I consider Milo as my boy. Thank you sooo much and love your pets.

I'll be completely honest with you -- Ol'Roy is the worst dog food you can buy. The WORST. And I don't say that lightly. However, it is fantastic that you want to switch him to something healthier. The dog food market has improved vastly over the years and there are many wonderful food choices available.

Anything by these brands; Eagle Pack, Canidae, Timberwolf Organics, California Natural, Innova, Solid Gold and Chicken Soup For the Pet Lovers Soul are high quality foods. Even some of the brands you can get in places such as PetSmart (Natural Balance, Nutro, etc.) are ok. Switch to any of those and I bet you will see improvements in your dog.

Good luck!

Ol'Roy is some of the worst dog food you can possibly buy for your dog. Beneful, Science Diet, Purina, Iams and Eukanuba aren't that good either. I would recommend Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Flint River Ranch, Canidae, Wellness, Timberwolf Organics, etc. Those are higher quality foods. It's not good if corn in the second ingredient either. If your dog does well on the lower quality foods, you can stick with it, but there are much better choices out there. Have your dog try one of the higher quality foods, and if it's not right for him, switch to a different one, but try to stay away from the lower quality foods.

Ole' Roy is one of the absolute worst foods on the market...it is comparitable to feeding your dog gravy & fat soaked sawdust.

Store brand foods are low quality..they include Pedigree, Alpo, Purina, Science Diet, Beneful (one of the worst), IAMS/Eukanuba, etc..they contain too much cheap fillers..corn, wheat, soy & beet pulp and by products and not enough real meat protein. It takes up to 3 times more of these cheap quality grain based foods for a dog to get proepr nutrition then it does of a good quality meat based food. Meat should be at least the first 2-3 ingredients.
Some good choices are: Canidae, Solid Gold, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Fromm, Merrick, Innova..

Okay... According to Oprah and Martha Stewart's vet... The best food to feed your dog is a raw diet. If you can't feed raw, you probably aren't going to cook your dog food... so the next best thing is a really good canned/wet diet without grains (corn, wheat, barley, etc.). If you won't feed canned/wet, then you have kibble. If you are going to feed kibble- then same applies. Look for a really high quality food that is grain free. Grains/vegetables/plant are bad for dogs... Dogs can't digest plant matter due to the lack of enzymes to break down the cellular walls. Dogs are CARNIVORES, and as such, they meant to eat prey (meat, flesh, fur/feathers, organs, bones, etc.)

If you love your dog like a child... Please go read the books on this site... you would be amazed at what you will learn, and it will make a world of difference to your dog:

The basic diet of your dog depends on his needs. I personally would recommend a food called natural choice or nutro. It is a food with the least amount of fillers inside of it. Fillers are basically corn products used to make up the bulk of the food. You also want to stay away from high protein foods because this can injure your dog.

Hi, I have a Beagle mix also...and I'm not sure what the other half of him is - some say boxer or bulldog because he is a bit bigger and has an awesome way of standing. He weighs 39.5 pounds! We feed him only once a day - Science Diet - mature adult 7+ small bits and mix it with Beneful Prepared meals(only a 1/4 of the dish) and of course...he gets some treats!
Good Luck - they really are our kids, aren't they????

i would try, natures variety or wysong(sp?)..natures variety is great for all ages and has no by products, corn or wheat..it is not heated, it is frozen which keeps all the natural ingredients in it and helps keep dogs healthier..if you would like to read about it check out their website..but its a wonderful food and i feed it too all of my foster dogs and my own dog!

science diet and purina r suppose to b the best foods on the market. What does ur vet recommend? If u've had Milo all these years with no problems , why change his food at all. I think ur best bet is to talk to ur vet.

Well, fi you got it from a breeder, you should probably ask them.
But you could also try Medium or Small dog food, like Eukunuba (sp?) or Natural Choice.
Since your dog is full grown, I would suggest a hard, dry food.
Good luck!
