They rely on donations and volunteers. They are building homes for those who can not afford them otherwise. Their goal is to provide housing, everything else is so expensive right now, that is an impossibility. The materials are the cheapest and most effective for what they are trying to accomplish, and the volunteer labour is free. You sound like you're advocating that the recipients should live in housing of a third world country. That is very insulting.

This is an excellent question! While I'm a big fan of alternative methods, I think that Habitat depends on so much volunteer labor, with basic (wood frame/brick) building expertise for their houses, that it would be difficult to find a "team" of straw-bale builders to complete the job. Not "out of the question"..but, difficult. I hope someone from Habitat see's this and starts "rubbing his chin"!
