Help - have been dying my hair dark for a while but decided that I wanted to go lighter for the summer (naturally a mid - mousy - brown). I though that it might look a bit funny dark brown with blonde highlights so I tried to lighten it myself first.
However I now have golden brown hair but blondish roots - will highlights help fix this or should I just go brown again?

Get more tint that is one shade lighter than the color of the main part of your hair NOW. Have someone help you put the color just on the roots that are light. Check the color in 1/2 the time the instructions call for and keep watching until the roots match the ends. Do not put the color all over. Tint usually won't lighten previously tinted hair which is why you got funky roots from natural hair.

The easy way would be to put a golden brown on the root area ONLY.
Another option is to get highlights that match the root are put on the shaft/length of your hair.

Its your call as to what is best for you!
