I brought my dog home from the animal shelter last saturday. The first couple days he was really jumpy, full of energy, and wanted to explore everything. I wouldn't let him off his leash but took him where he wanted to go (I thought he was only 4 months and not housebroken). When I took him to the vet on Thursday (he got fixed) I found out he was 1 year and realized he was housebroken (he hadn't tried but I take him out alot).

Now he just likes to sit by himself, play with his rope toy- he still chases squirrels on our walks and generally seems happy/content. Is he depressed or just settled into his new home?

When I got him I assumed he was not housebroken. He walked in the house, raised his leg to 'mark' a coffee table. I said 'NO' took him outside he marked whatever he wanted out there. He never tried to pee or poop inside again. He's been running around free in the house for 3 days now and still hasn't tried- I am almost sure he is housebroken.

It sounds like he's getting settled in - and it sounds like he's got a great new home! You said he seems happy and content, so I don't think he's depressed. One of the great things about dogs is that they don't lie - if they're depressed, you'll know. Depending on how long he was at the shelter, he might have gotten into the habit of spending time on his own and entertaining himself from being in a kennel.

If you feel like he's not bonding with you and spending too much time by himself, you might try some bonding exercises. Teaching your dog tricks or practicing obedience is a great way to establish a good relationship with him(especially if you've got treats!) It'll also keep his mind active and keep him from getting bored.

he sounds fine..if he was whinning and pacing the floor, then i might be concerned..but he is just fully adjusted to his new inviroment which means you guys did an awesome job of making him feel loved and safe..and by going to the vet and finding he is a year old doesn't automatically confirm that he is house broken..lol..but congrats on the new family member

If hes still playing and seems happy then its unlikely that he's depressed.
hes probably just calming down and settling in, your and your home are no longer a new exciting thing to him.

When dogs get fixed, they tend to calm down a bit. Once his hormones are regulated, he'll be the cute little spaz again.

No worries.

Sounds to me like he is adjusting to his new surroundings. Try to get him into a routine ASAP -- it will make him feel much more secure.
