I have a 25 pound Maine coon. I know Maine Coon cats a larger but 25lbs is too much. He is only 5 years old. I have changed his food to a more healthy type per vet recommendation. My problem is he cries for food almost all day. It has become a comfort thing for him. Anytime a person comes through the front door he runs to his dish or when I brush him, he hears me get up in the morning, I walk by his dish, anything he runs for food.
He meows so loud and for as long as it takes for me to give in and feed him. He doesn't eat human food at all. I need advice on how to break his habbit behavior.
Also advice on exercise for cats. he does have open access to the outdoors. thank you

What food did your vet recommend? Chances are good that he or she recommended a dry food and told you to cut back on portions.

Doesn't work!

Believe it or not, many vets know next to nothing about proper cat nutrition. In every other aspect they're great, but in this area even I know more than some of them do!

If you select a good quality CANNED food, you can give Mr. Piggy up to a can per day (6oz) and he will still lose weight at a safe pace (about 1 pound per month).

Because the food is species appropriate, meaning that it is low in carbs and high in protein and fat, you can feed this amount that may seem like a lot. Your cat will be getting plenty to eat and it's quite possible that he'll stop bugging you for more. He might still do it - let's face it, they can be little con artists - but you can rest assured that he won't be starving and you can ignore him with no qualms.

Poppy, pictured here, used to weigh 25 pounds too.

One additional thing you can try - buy some L-Carnitine. You can find it online or in most health stores. You can give your cat around 250-500 mg per day, added to food if you can't give pills. It has been shown to help with weight loss.

Feed him his usual daily amount in halves or thirds, 2 or 3 times a day, to help relieve his 'hunger pains'. Keep a spray bottle with water in it next to the food area, and when he comes begging, punish him with a good squirt!

I have to do the same for my cat, she's gotten into a terrible habit of crying for food, but she is gradually learning that crying equals a squirt in the face, and she's deciding she doesn't like it! Be consistent and don't give up, cats are stubborn and sometimes take a little while to pick up a lesson.

It surely seems like your cat is ill. Being a choosy eater is something, however wasting giant weight is normally a signal of a unsafe illness or disorder, and even melanoma in a cat. I feel you must pass to the Cats Protection League and spot if they may be able to present any inexpensive healing choices in your cat. Your cat demands scientific concentration. It is convenient to look that. Any time a cat begins wasting weight speedily, this is a signal that anything is critically incorrect. Please, should you care approximately this animal and do not desire it to die, then do anything it takes to get it the scientific concentration and care it certainly demands. If you wait too lengthy, it can be too overdue to put it aside. It sounds such as you must act speedy. So do not lengthen -- carry it to the Cats Protection League as quickly as feasible! I wish that helped. Best of success.

I must say firsthand that you should keep your cat indoors (much safer). Just supply lots of toys. Anyway, we have a heavy cat (not as much as yours) and he had trouble cleaning himself. He needed a diet food w/more fiber so he's on Science Diet Light. Fed twice a day, 1/4c each serving. Not a lot I know&I felt guilty at first but he's just fine with it now.

Just like a person.
Just don't give in.
Apparently ( not against YOu) have allowed him to get to be this way.Sorry to say it is much harder to break bad habits than to have trained correctly in teh beginning.
Just be persitant.
Find things she likes to playwith and get her to exercise.
Good Luck it won't be easy but it will be worth the additional time you will have with your cat.
