Didn't your puppy's breeders give a recommendation for food? The best brands are Innova, Wellness, Canidae, Solid Gold and Timberwolf Organics. They don't contain any of the cheap fillers that dogs can't digest like corn or rice gluten, sorghum, wheat or beet pulp. You don't want to be feeding your puppy any supermarket brands of dog food - and that includes no Iams, no Purina, no Beneful or any of that cheap crap.

Natural Balance Ulta Premium, which is a bit pricey, is honestly made of the best stuff you can give your dog. Its organic, does NOT use byproducts, and has brown rice (very healthy compared to white rice) a multitude of greens, and supplemental food such as kelp, flaxseed, etc. Its honestly a very healthy brand of food, but rather on the expensive side ($25+ a 17 lb bag)
Other premium brands that I recommend: Innova, Orijen, Nature's Variety, Timberwolf Organics...
If that stuff is too expensive (I know it is for me), other decent-priced dog foods I would recommend are: Canidae, Acana, Dr. Foster and Smith, Solid Gold...
If its still too pricey and you're leaning towards the grocery store, pet store type of food: A really good bestbuy is Kirkland Signature Premium Dog Food (the Costco brand). Its cheaply priced, like all Costco products, but comparable to or better than most common brands like Iams, Purina etc.

I gave my puppy Purina Puppy chow. However if you dont mind spending more money any type of all natural food is the best. (Natures Recipe, Nutro Natural Choice...etc). Most of the cheaper brands(Pedigree,Purina..etc) have corn which a lot of dogs are allergic to and animal by-product which if you research it- is nasty. I switched my dogs a month ago to Nutro Max and they stopped scratching
If you dont want to spend $30/bag then start with puppy chow or something($10-$15/bag) and keep an eye out for scratching, vomit...etc.
Good Luck

Well, the clinic I work at recommends Hills Science Diet. That's what I feed my puppies. However, before I worked at the vet office, I always fed either Purina or Pedigree. Both are excellent and are not as expensive as Science Diet. Iams is a good one if you want to pay a bit more. Personally, if I am going to pay more for dog food, I'm going to get Science Diet.

Raw meat is what your CARNIVORE (which dogs are) should be eating. Even Oprah's vet recommended a raw diet as the best you can feed your dog. Then came homecooking your dogs food... then High Quality Grain Free Wet/Canned, and last was High Quality Grain Free Kibble.
Nature's Variety, Evo and several other brands make a grain free diet. You can google: dog + food + grain free
www.leerburg.com is a good place to find info on raising a German Shepherd.
good luck.

I use Nature's Variety. There are several great foods out there that are good for your growing puppy. Other foods that are good are Wellness, Canidae, Timberwolf Organics, Solid Gold and Innova.

I would recommend purina one. It is a good quality food that is not very expensive. Plus all my dogs love the lamb and rice formula.
