Let me put it to you this way, your dad may have been very young and unhappy as you were growing up and it may have had absolutely nothing to do with you. Be a bigger person, call him up and say to him I just wanted you to know I've been thinking of you today Dad.

Because when your dad dies he'll be gone a long time and you 'll wish you had called when he was alive .

I'm not so shocked from this question, because I'm actually going through the same exact thing.

My parents are divorced and are on speaking terms, but more along the lines of discussing certain things when it comes to me and my siblings.

Long story short, my mother really has always been the mother/father of my life. And my father I haven't spoken with in a good year or so. He calls me, but I never pick-up the phone.

As I sit here still deciding, I think I might just text him a Happy Father's day. I know you might think it's corny and unrepectful but we do not communicate via phone, only texts from time to time (ever other 4 months).

So for your answer, if not a text, then maybe a simple phone call just to say Happy Father's Day. Don't feel guilty by keeping the call short and simple. You have plans for the day and you cannot talk long.

Good Luck!

People change. Maybe showing respect for your father now will prompt a change in his attitude.
Forgiving him will be the only way you will ever have peace over your relationship with him. When you forgive him, even if he doesn't deserve it, you release yourself from the chains of anger that will bind you to him and to the unhappiness he's caused you.
I'd say, if you can, call him. Keep it short. If you can't call, send him a nice, unsentimental card. If not for him, you wouldn't be here, so, thank him for giving you life.
But don't let him draw you into any unpleasantness if he is unable to respond in a loving manner. Hopefully, he'll appreciate being remembered. Stranger things have happened! Good luck.

You don't HAVE to do anything. What's the point if you don't feel like doing it? If he abused you growing up then I wouldn't send him anything.

On the other hand, if your dad was just raising you the best way he knew how, it would be NICE to get a call from their kids saying 'Thanks for at least making the effort'. Nobody is perfect and I think we live in a time where people want to focus on all the bad times they had without remembering the good times. Either way, you only have one dad. Whether you decide to trash that relationship or enjoy it is up to you.

Yes. My daddy hits me and sometimes kicks me out of the house when I'm bad. No matter how much he hurts me, I still remember the good days when I was around 5, and he played baseball with me in our backyard. I love him bunches.
Always remember the good memories. Because if it wasn't for your daddy, you wouldn't be here today.
You've only got one real dad. Don't put him to waste.

I say, if you are not close to your dad or that he is not a good father, then all he should get is a .50 card from the dollar store. ONLY IF YOU want to. but don't even have to do that either.

Stress sometimes does that, or other factors. Do you have to call him up? No. Look at it this way, if he died next week, would it bother you that you did not attempt to mend broken fences, or that you did not call? If the answer is yes then call him

A card would be a fine way to be polite, show respect and not have to carry on a conversation if you don't want to.
