I need to get my tonsils out. My tonsils are huge and the doctor said that if i dont get surgery, then i'll loose my voice, and theres a chance that it wont come back. I'm really scared. Plus, i sing a lot. Will the surgery affect my voice in any way? also, if any of you have ever had your tonsils takien out then can you tell me how it feels, and what the doctors do at first?

I can't give you full details because my own tonsils were taken out over 20 years ago, but I VERY STRONGLY recommend you see to it your adenoids are removed as well. When my tonsils were removed, that idiot doctor decided to leave my adenoids in place. And now, as a result of his blatant stupidity, I now sound very nasally when I talk. I promise you, this is NOT a joke. You should also see to it you get plenty of your favorite flavor of ice cream, and very cold drinks like juice, tea, and water. I didn't get very much, and as a result, my recovery was almost as bad as the ordeal I was going through before my surgery. Again, I promise you this is NOT a joke. And this also can be blamed on the doctor's blatant stupidity. I hope your surgery goes well for you. Good Luck, I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Tonsillectomy shouldn't affect your voice over the longterm since your tonsils are pretty far from your vocal cords. However, for the first few days after surgery, it may be painful to talk because of irritation at the surgical site and you may be a little hoarse for the first day or two because of irritation from the breathing tube. How you will respond to the surgery in terms of pain is hard to predict, since everyone has a different experience. For the most part though, the older you get the more painful it tends to be, but most people get pretty good pain control with the medications your doctor will prescribe for you afterwards.

they are sore for about a week after =what the Dr does first is put you to sleep ,to take the tonsils out===no ,it does not change you voice =but do wait until you are all better before singing or yelling ,as this will strain the area

first of all, I had my first surgery a month ago and almost threw up I was so nervous so I suggest bringing an ipod or magazine anything to distract you, tonsilectomies are done so often that there is nothing to be worried about, in fact you can look forward to singing and eating a lot of ice cream...good luck!!

I was only three years old when I had mine out. I think if you get them out and give yourself enough time to heal your voice should come back fine. Just remember baby steps.
