Jews and Muslims don't eat pork, because that type of meat is considered unclean. The Muslim word is that it is not 'halal'. The Hebrew or Jewish word is that it isn't 'Kosher'. There is probably a regional historical cause here. Both of these religions started in the Middle east. The taboo on eating pork clearly has an old religious background there.

God forbid pork for Christians, Jews and Muslims. Christians changed that fact in the bible and now they eat it. whereas Muslim and Jews don't besides for it being dirty.. undercooked pork can also lead to a non functioning digestive system.

And yeah the Quran and Bible come from the same decent only difference is that Quran was never changed and are the actual words of Allah where as Christianity has a tendency to change things for their convenience..

So to the person that was saying its proof of the Bible.. NO it's proof of God because it was commanded for people in general.

I can't answer for Muslims. But for Jews, it says explicitly in two places in the Torah that pigs are forbidden, as well as a lot of other animals.
The general biblical guidelines:
- Kosher animals need to chew thier cud and have split hooves. Pig, rabbits, camels, and hyraxes are singled out as having only one of the signs, and thus not being kosher.
- Fish need to have fins and scales.
- Instead of listing kosher birds, the Bible lists all 24 non-kosher birds. Anything else is permitted. Problem: the translations for the names of those birds has been lost over the years. Modern Jews only eat birds that have traditionally been considered kosher.
- The reason for these restrictions? The Bible only gives one: it makes people holy.

Basically, for similar reasons. Just replace "Quran" for "Tanakh". And no, typically we don't (excluding Reform Jews here, since they are an exception to this). And yes, I've had it before, and to say that I wasn't impressed. The best hotdogs are Hebrew National (i.e. not pork), turkey bacon is better than real bacon, and I don't think it is great tasting, personally.

One explanation is that trichinosis, leprosy and other diseases harbored by pigs were rampant in ancient cultures. These diseases were not well understood, but a way they could deal with it was to forbid the consumption of pork.

Another possibility, according to wikipedia: "Pigs require water and shade woods with seeds, but those conditions are scarce in Israel and Arabia. They cannot forage grass like ruminants. Instead, they compete with humans for expensive grain."

To Mark F (below):
I wasn't trying to explain why God forbade it. I was trying to explain how such a rule might have grown up on these cultures. Most religious rules have some basis in a past social need.

The Old Testament says forbids Jews to eat animals that don't have split hooves or doesn't chew it's cud.(Leviticus11:3). All this talk about dirty, unhealthy etc., is people's trying to understand why G-d forbade it. If you would have clean pigs or prove that pigs don't cause certain diseases, that is totally irrelevant, because the Bible didn't say that is why it is forbidden.

Imagine trying to keep pork safe to eat, in a hot desert climate! I think it started out as a simple food-safe rule.

In the Old Testament of the book of Leviticus it said pig is a dirty, impure animal. Both of them have followed this rule.
