umm ok so im in middle school.
we got our yearbooks the other day and had a signing.
so apparently people were writng (and drawing i think) very inappropriate things. (and then they had the teachers sign them) [???]
so they took the yearbooks away.
i mean, we all PAID for them. they can't just do that!!! or can they?

your thoughts please.

They shouldn't be able to do that, especially not to those who didn't participate in the inappropriate stuff. I know it's hard to find out who the culprits are sometimes, but that doesn't make it okay to punish the whole class! The teachers should return the books at least to those who didn't participate. Possibly they could use a marker or blank labels to blank out anything nasty, or if they can find the guys who did this, make them do it.

Personal experience. In 1979 when I was in middle school I let my yearbook out to a bucnh of kidsto sign on the school bus. They ruined it. THey drew sick things all over the pages and literally ruined it. They even coloredmy picture and wrote really nasty things. THat was a long time ago and I could not get another yearbook to replace it so I tried to use white out to cover the obscenties but it did not work and I had to throw it away. Sad I will never me able to get another one.

Kids are kids and capable of all sorts of nasty things if left unsupervised. The teachers were right, they were only trying to protect you. And actually its your parrents year book if your still a minor becuase they payed for it.

Hang in there, the teachers meant well

I think people take "freedom of speech" too far. For instance, if I curse at someone for no reason, should I use freedom of speech is my defense? No, freedom of speech only works if you voice your opinions appropriately or stand up for yourself if someone suppressed you. In your case, perhaps your teacher found that what people wrote in your yearbook is inappropriate because of the language that they use either can offense or hurtful to someone who reads it. The teacher should take it away because they're there to teach children to have manners, respect, to learn etc.. I know some children today use foul language and have no respect to anymore more than ever. Perhaps some are used to it but others may not.

Ok. This is a tricky thing, since I don't know what was written. It might have been correct for them to take the books. But in only my opinion, they should have replaced the books, since you paying for them is key, they were your property.

By the way, freedom of speech refers to the right to criticize the government without fear of retribution. It does not mean anyone has the right to say anything to anybody about anything, anytime, anywhere. This is a misunderstanding some people use to justify bad behavior.

When you ask someone to sign your yearbook, you open yourself up to whatever they have to say. If you are so fragile that that can hurt you, you should keep the book to yourself.

When you purchase something, it is your property and cannot be taken from you by the government (of which the school is a part) without due process. Consult the Constitution of the United States.

If the yearbooks were paid for by you and the other students, they are your property. You can demand to get your books back! Talk to your parents about this!

Unfortunately, many of the freedoms they teach you about in school don't apply until you are out of school - although that is not necessarily a good thing.

You are right. Unless they plan on refunding your money, get your parents involved. You should get yearbooks or cash.

Violation of school rules= punishment. Taking your property is going too far. File a complaint against the teachers if they violated the rules governing their behavior. you need to find out what the teachers are permitted to do, then act accordingly.

a student in a school has less rights than an inmate in a prison. If this is the worse they've done to you, be glad no one has told them anything that might make them want to strip or cavity search you.

If you bought the yearbook, it is your property. You cannot control the behaviors of others
