This is very sad but there are a few ways a dog can die.
First is stress. It can be very scary and a dog can stress to the point that they panic and either cause them-self damage trying to get out or physically die from the stress on their bodies.
Secondly, this can really depend on what type of dog, they can suffocate. Some dog breeds are prone to collapsing trachea where their windpipe can basically shut and they can not breath.
I hope this is a hypothetical question and not something you have had to deal with

Fear is one thing, could have a heart attack from it. Also as previously mentioned, heat. Most airlines will not allow any pets to fly when the tempature is over 82 degrees. My pup flew from a breeder in South Carolina to California, and was delayed 2 days because of the tempature along the flight. He's also very scared of loud noises, vacumn cleaner, lawn mowers, weed eaters scare him, so I think the trauma of the flight made him scared as well.

I will go with the Air mentioned. Many jets fly very high, this why the cabin is pressurized for the people. The higher it goes, the less air. So, in the unpressurized luggage compartment there "May" be a lack of air. This would be my main concern. But, today, maybe that area is pressurized because of animals.

Maybe the dog is used to a certain air pressure. My guess is either extreme air pressure changes resulting lack of breath. Either that or heat stroke. Or if the dog is old he/she could die from natural causes.

We shipped our 6 year old german shephard to Chile from JFK and she was fine(thats about a 10-12 hour flight). We just gave her tranquilizers and the crate had a place for food and water inside. She survived and lived another 6 years after that.

They can die from the heat. Maybe they were sick already. Small dogs can doe from hypoglycemia. It could be from any number of reasons. That is why I so not ship puppies.

most airlines have blackout periods where you cannot ship a pet as cargo. This is due to the extreme heat or cold in the cargo section. Shipping a pet as cargo is very stressful for them and a vet will not want you to sedate them. Only ship a pet if you absolutely have to.

Well, sometimes the pressure of how high the plane is can really hurt their ears, but I dont think that that could kill him. Uhm, maybe sometimes their carries could flip over or roll back and forth and hurt them. I am really not sure. Hope I helped you.

It gets very hot under the plane. And heatstroke kills dogs very quickly.

It's possible, but if the dog is traveling you should drug it and make sure that it is comfortable.
