No, not at all. It deals with a child being molested, a dog being burnt alive, a mom and baby being killed by a mailbox that had explosives in it. and has nudity. You can get specifics on movies at www.kidsinmind.com and it goes over everything.

If you have a set preference for ratings (nothing R or above) check out the ratings. I have not seen "The Butterfly Effect" either, but from the previews probably not without me watching first to see whats going on.
Also try to see movie reviews online (maybe even watch a bit) to see what you think. Also get the name of the the subtitled movie and research it. If it's an older flick - you're most likely OK. Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns are cool and don't have any sex scenes or lots of foul language. I did a quick Google search for you and here are a couple of websites for movie reviews. Hope this helps!!

I completely agree with Melissa... The "Butterfly Effect" is in no way a kids movie.. It deals with VERY mature issues and has alot of violence.. I found the movie very disturbing and confusing.. I don't know about the war movie (I'm not a fan of war movies at all) but it depends on how you feel about your children watching something like that.. If they normally watch movies with violence then you might consider letting them see the war movie.. However if I was in your place I would tell them (and their friend) that the Butterfly Effect was a definate NO..... Just a thought.. why aren't they watching movies for youths their own age?? I know of a few good PG-13 movies that are out there..

Well the war movie with Spanish subtitles is most likely Pan's labyrinth, in which it is R and has a very violent scene in the beginning of the movie as well as some "language". But, as for the butterfly effect I don't think its that bad at all. I'm not saying Pan's Labyrinth isn't a good movie, but you might want to think if she would handle the violence well and/or the language. But, there's always fast forward.

RE:
is "The Butterfly Effect" kid-friendly?
I haven't seen it, but a little girl (she's 11) wants to know if my kids (13 and 10) can watch it at her sleepover. Would you let your kids?
She also mentioned some war movie with Spanish subtitles, but she didn't tell me the name of the movie.

I think it depends on your children and their ability to handle certain themes. This movie involves child molestation, violent scenes, etc. I would say no, your 13 year old may be ok but the 10 year old.. no.
And if the Spanish movie is Pan's Labyrinth, then a definite NO. I watched it and was shocked at certain scenes. It is very violent(as it is about war). There are scenes involving torture, and one scene with one of the characters smashing someones face in with a bottle(left nothing to the imagination). There are more violent scenes than that, but I don't want to post spoilers. It looks as if it would be a kids movie, but it certainly is not. You may also want to mention this to the parents of the child, as they may not be aware of the kind of movie Pan's Labyrinth is.

Even if the actors in the film are your children's age, doesn't mean they should watch it. As everyone else has mentioned, there are many reasons why.. Find them an alternative. There's plenty to choose from, anytime you watch a movie as your kids get older, watch with your spouse or BF and then discuss If the children should be aloud to see it. Make your own decision. You will do what is right, regarding your children's maturity and ability to deal with the bad situations in the film against enjoying the over-all entertainment value of it. Take charge by involving your own participation and your own decision.. You can do it on your own...Believe me?

No we would not here. Both the movies you mention are rated "R" There are far better movies for 10 yr olds. I am not saying that SOME with that rating would be bad, but as someone said here, you as a parent need to see them first and then decide.

I think it's a little intense for an 10-year-old. I have a daughter this age also, and I didn't let her watch it. There are also some sexual themes.
Perhaps you can suggest some titles for the sleepover that you would be familiar and comfortable with.

Well we own the movie and my daughter is 15. We saw it in the theators when she was 12 I think she was anyway. She really liked it. It was a little more disturbing than I thought it was going to be but it is a good movie. I am not sure about the 10 yr old but the 13 yr old fine. At anyrate you should never let your kids see any R rated movie without you first seeing it because it is hard to say what YOU will find offensive and what YOU will find graphic or not o.k. for your own children.
