They just overcharge you in UK - the movies are about $20 - $25 here in the US. And since Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are not region coded - you should get them here. www.deepdiscount.com has a 20% sale (today is the last day) on all DVDs - including HD and Blu-Ray. Coupon code - SUPERSALE.
I got whole munch of HD and Blu-Ray DVDs for an average of $20.

It is true that some movies are transcoded to blue-ray better than others.
In a true HD movie they have to rescan the film at 1080p, and author the DVD at 1080p.
Who knows, maybe in some old movies, they just digitally scale the original 480p to 1080p.
Also LCDs don't have yet the color depth of old CRTs or plasma, so you may see lots of color banding.

It is a waste of money, but its not "just the same" as you stated.

However, I do believe you need a HD tv and blu-ray player to get the full effects, which means you have to spend a hell of a lot more money to get your moneys worth for the film you just bought
