I like things in the house a particular way. No dishes in the sink, I don't sleep with the t.v. on, I'm usually in bed by 10:00 (not always sleep). I need quiet in order to sleep. What do you do when your house guest are the total opposite. I do have ear plugs, but knowing there are people creeping around in the house, breaking all the rules (lol), I still don't sleep too comfortable. So where's the middle ground or do I just wait for them to leave to get a good night's rest?

they can't stay in a hotel. it's difficult when you have to go to work the next day and you get no sleep. i can deal with them in the daytime, but at night, i need sleep.

i don't hand out a rule list, but i have had guest leave lights on all night, running water, the fridge open, crumbs and food in the kitchen. now i'm supposed to work all day, come home an clean up after house guest? i don't think so. house guest assume no responsibility when staying in other peoples home and the hostess, in order to be a good hostess, is just supposed to let them come in an do whatever they want? somebody give me a better answer. its okay that they stay, but when in rome, don't you do what the romans do? i make breakfast, lunch and dinner and wash the dishes. they mess up and then go to bed. So, again, how do you deal with incompatible house that you want to welcome into your home, but they exhibit hotel behavior?

Unfortunately, you cant be rude. Just sweat it out until they go. You dont want them to hate you.

It depends on how long your house guest is staying. If it is only a few days, you need to be a good host and just deal with it. If it's long-term, you need to let them know that while you enjoy having them there are a few things that you need to maintain the necessary order in your life and you would like to ask for their help with this.
Really the only other option is to not have house guests. If you are only talking about a few days, I think you are being a little inflexible referring to "rules" that are a little picky for a short-term house-guest. Part of being a good host is making your guests feel happy and comfortable in your home - not the other way around. That often includes picking up after them a little, staying up later than you want to visit with them, etc.

Well, obsessive compulsive personalities like everything a certain way. I suggest your guests reside in a hotel in the future. Otherwise, if you invited them, explain the house rules and chase them down for each infraction and they might go stay in a hotel without your suggesting it or you can just put up with their behavior hun. No magic words to fix the irritation you feel except not having guests.

How long are they going to be there that you can't be a good hostess and ignore other people's habits. I don't set rules for people I invite into my home. Next time arrange and pay for them to stay in a nice hotel. They probably will anyway.

The ability to overlook other people's idiosyncrasies is a sign of maturity.

If it bothers you that much, don't have houseguests again.

If it's your place, then you have the perfect right to ask them to please leave. (You need to get on with your life, and more so, you need proper rest)
