Octane recommendations
Your vehicle is designed to use
“Premium” unleaded gasoline with
an (R+M)/2 octane rating of 91 or
higher for optimum performance.
The use of gasolines with lower
octane ratings may degrade performance. We do not recommend the use
of gasolines labeled as “Premium” in high altitude areas that are sold
with octane ratings of less than 91.
Do not be concerned if your engine sometimes knocks lightly. However, if
it knocks heavily under most driving conditions while you are using fuel
with the recommended octane rating, see your dealer or a qualified
service technician to prevent any engine damage.

It really depends on the model, but you should always try to stay with premium gasoline when you have a high-performance or a V8 automobile. The LS should use premium, but if you are in a pinch, it is the one 01 Lincoln that can probably use the cheaper stuff. Just make sure that it is a good brand of gas, pref. Mobil/Exxon or Shell. Cheap "premium" gas is worse than good-quality regular gasoline.

Check with the dealer as the engine was designed to run on the high octane when the label says 91. Some cars have an octane sensor and will change the engine parameters when 87 octane is run in it. However, if not, some brands of cars will damage the exhaust system if the right fuel isn't used. Good Luck!

During the summer, I alternate between fillups of 87 followed by 91. during the cooler weather, i stick with 87-89 depending where I am. I never carry a heavy load in the car and the arent too many highmountains or steep gradients in New Jersey, so no knock!!

Open the glove box, pull out the manual. See what it says there? 91 octane. That's premium.

91 octane is recomended, although I use 87 most of the time, and unless you drive it hard, it works just fine.
