It all depends on the question. Sometimes I use Martin Luther King, sometimes Jesus, sometimes Esther (queen in the old testament), sometimes, I've even used...(God forgive me, our oh so ethical) President, GW Bush.

Pet characters are usually used to try to make the other person's argument look silly, or (sometimes) to establish a point of reference. IE, an atheist will have an easier time explaining to a Christian why he places Yahweh on the same level as Zeus by naming Zeus.
Usually, though, I see it used to ridicule the other person's beliefs. Comparing someone's refusal to believe in the existence or nonexistence of god to refusing to say if there is a polka-dotted chimpanzee dancing above their head doesn't making that person's belief any less serious, it just illustrates the speaker's personal bias. There are occasions when the asker is asking something ridiculous, but I think getting into the habit of always going for a mock is a debate weakness. If you can't express yourself except by attacking the other person's beliefs you can't express yourself very well. Hence I try to avoid the use of them.

If I do, it wouldn't be as explicit. I tend to use a lot of movie quotes, some obscure, others more obvious. Kevin Smith's movies are usually a good place to start. Johnny Depp was awesome in Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas btw.
Oh yeah. If we're talking seperation of church & state stuff, no discussion is complete without bringing up the dubya.

I'd go for Johnny Depp, but you already took him! Care to do a coin toss?
I don't have a pet character, but I think the initials
WTF?, are extremely funny....
I think that would make a great T-shirt slogan....(see, I'm laughing at this)....:)

Johnny Depp is not a bad choice at all...my favorite example is probably Mr. Spock, since he was one of my earliest philosophical influences!

I don't know if I do because I've never really noticed. I'd have to go back and look through my previous answers and to be honest, there are way too many of them and I'm not inclined to look.

I have not noticed if I do this. I did use Clive & Tom earlier today but it seems as if I need to expand my horizons a bit

The Tooth Faerie. I like spelling it that way because it is right, but I get told that faerie should be fairy all the time.
I like Zeus and Odin too.
