Depends on the year of the car, but i'll guess it's a newer model.
Does your gear indicator look like this?
P R N D 3 2 L? If there's no '2' that's ok too.
D is actually an 'overdrive' gear, used for highway speeds. It's a higher gear ratio and saves you gas at high speeds. It might actually be a smaller D with a circle around it, indicating overdrive.
3 is the gear you should use for regular driving, like around town.
L is like 1st gear, a really low gear ratio, and used to climb steep hills or help slow you down while you descend steep hills. The L stands for 'low'. It gives your heavy car some help to do harder jobs without straining your transmission.

Your car owner's manual should say that D is the normal overdrive and 3 is the non-overdrive position you can drive in also at any speed, but typically getting less gas mileage. L may stand for "Low", a gear you can only go up to about 25 mph in.

L is where you would start out in snow or ice or pulling a trailer.
As you gain a little speed slip it up into 2 then 3 then drive.
