I dont know if you have lost any close loved ones, but the most astonishing thing about it is that there isnt much pain. Just a little guilt, confusion, and sometimes forgetting they are dead. In fact it annoys me when people act like it has to be a huge deal they could never understand. Life goes on. Im still the same person.

Others can't feel the pain or whatever the emotion is unless they've lost someone of the sort. But they can get a slight sense of it and empathize as best they can. But the extremes are different for everyone.

You can miss them of course. I know someone who spent most of his life being mean to everyone, then became a born again christian and spent the rest of his life trying to convert everyone around him, then commited suicide. I cared nothing for him in life but I still came to the funeral. I ended up leaving after I walked in to find the place looking particularly empty though. No pain, just kind of missed him. Don't think he'd have wanted an atheist at his funeral anyway.

It seems that we are all a lot closer than we like to admit and there is a common empathy among the human family regardless of color and creed, since the fall of Adam and Eve we have lost the ability of some higher gifts and our inner connection to one another as the one species and family has weakened considerably, and yet we find that certain individuals possess a heightened awareness of connection to others.

Yes you can if you are a sensitive and compassionate person. However, nobody can know the exact pain that someone is going through because that is individual but they can empathise.
