No, rather the idea is that the general principle upon which all the Law and prophets are based can be expressed in those two commands. Thus these are the priority to keep in mind
Mark 22:36-40 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: "’Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
Ro 13:9 The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself."
Ga 5:14 The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself."

Actually, the two new commandments are sort of the summary of all the original 10.
Love God with all your heart summarizes the first 4 ones, while Love others as he loves us summarizes the last 6.

Yes, if you love God it would be as you say...that's point. The reference is a summary statement, given in answer to the question, "Which is the greatest commandment?" Jesus' reply was not that there are only two, but these are the greatest--"love God with all your heart etc...and the second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself. The law and all the prophets hinge on these." Remember also that Jesus said to His disciples, "If you love me you will keep my commandments." We demonstrate that we love God with all our heart etc...by obeying His Word.

Actually, the two commandments you mention served as a "bridge" until the new covenant church could get around to readopting and readaptating the old commandments to the new realities of the grace-filled new covenant ... the covenant that is governed and administered solely by the universal Church that Jesus personally founded, authorized, empowered, and eternally guaranteed.
The Catholic Church readopted and readapted the old law in order to help guide and sanctify new covenant Christians, subject of course, to all the grace and mercy that Jesus obtained for us on the cross.
The law ... old or new ... any of it ... has never been capable of saving anyone.
Only Jesus can do that.
And the way Jesus chose to lead all generations to salvation is through the work, worship, sacraments, and devotions of the grace-filled, new covenant, universal Church ... the Catholic Church ... of which he remains the head.

These two commandments are a summary (if you are willing to accept it) of all the ten commandments.
For the First commandment, you have already expanded upon it well.
For the second one "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." If you love your neighbor,
- You can't steal from him
- You can't commit adultery
- You can't bear false witness
- You can't kill him or that which is his.......etc.
Since, your neighbor is anyone......you can't do any of the above to anyone. Thus, you have fulfilled all the ten commandments!

Jesus did not remove the commandments but simplified them he said if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and others as yourself then you will be following all God's commandments.
that was the point you will not lie steal or cheat your naybor or look at other god's if you love the true God with all your heart.

The two are;
(Matthew 22:37-40) He said to him: “‘You must love Jehovah your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind.’ 38Â This is the greatest and first commandment. 39Â The second, like it, is this, ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40Â On these two commandments the whole Law hangs, and the Prophets.”
Note; the whole law hangs,
nothing here about having to keep the sabbath

If you really loved your parents, your mom and dad, would you still hang around friends they don't like? Would you listen to music they don't approve of? Use bad language when they're not around? Forget to send them a birthday card?
Jesus is our real dad. We make mistakes, he carefully and thoughtfully disciplines us. He's a better dad than any human father could be.

Exactly right!
Isn't it a lot easier to live by two rules than try to remember all the little laws?
But, it seems at least in my case, I keep forgetting to walk in rule number 2.
