Depends on the mistakes. For some, no. Your best bet is to talk to a recruiter. Ask him/her about exceptions.

Good luck.

Depends on your mistakes dude. My suggestion to you is that you immediately march down to your local USMC recruiting office. The nice guy in dress blues will tell you the facts, sign you up if possible and give you a chance to get past your mistakes while serving your country with the best; if you can hack it. The Marine Corps will not fix anyone's basic character flaws, but if you have character the Marine Corps will allow you to proudly develop it. While strengthening your mind, body, showing you a reason for dedication and allowing you to believe in self respect.
This war sucks! The reasons we are at war, or went to war, are not even relevant anymore. We are at WAR. We are in a WAR. It doesn't matter if Bush lied, Congress is weak, Rumsfeld and Cheney are power-tripping, or even that we now all know the name Valerie Plame. We are in a war that if we don't collectively begin to take a whole lot more serious then me, you, our children's children are ******! Islam does not want to live in the "land of the big PX" as was the case with most of the population of South Vietnam. Islam is an idea not a country. Islam is like Jack Nicholson in "The Shining." Remember, "I don't want to hurt you, I just want to bash your head in." Yeah, that's it. Islam wants us dead (or, converted). Salladin wanted, "Death to the infidels."
And forget political correctness, because there is another reason the muslims hate us, we support Israel. Israel is considered a terrorist state to Islamic nations. It doesn't matter to them that Israelis are God's chosen people. Muhammad didn't get that in his translation. The Palestinians (muslims) were displaced by a political decision, by infidels, that created homelessness for generations of repressed muslims. Palestine is gone but they do remember when they had a home. There are a myriad of reasons why this war began, but it doesn't matter. It really doesn't. The pot has finally boiled over. The war has begun, and it isn't going to be fun anymore around here for awhile.
Talk to a recruiter, acknowledge your past and good luck. We're all going to need it, and The Marines; and personally, I think that a desire to seek to change your errors and serve your fellow Americans is commendable. Good luck.
But if you did anything: to children, the elderly, racist acts, or something beyond the scope of youthful stupidity then disregard anything I wrote and deal with a sorry life.

First off, to Sally C- SHAME ON YOU. Like they say, "If you won't stand behind them, stand in front of them". Calling ALL soldiers thugs is BS. Like any group there are bad apples, and they are always the ones that get the most publicity.

Now, about the mistakes... it really does depend on what you did, and when you did it. Certain criminal convictions can be forgiven, but most "violent" offenses are quite frowned on and will probably disqualify you for service. One thing is for sure, you need to talk to a recruiter about this, and BE UPFRONT WITH THEM. Some things are able to be forgiven, as long as you declare them before. Because believe me, they will find out, and neither of you will be happy for wasting your time.

Depends what you did ...if you went loose in the neighborhood with an arsenal of weapons strapped to you and for hours went round popping slugs into people pruning their roses and stuff resulting in a pitched gun battle with the local SWAT...Then I think no you might not get in to the job you want. You would find 'mucking out ' at the local penitentary more suitable.

Some things they will let slip through but they do have certain restrictions. Talk to any of the branch recruits--check out your options and good luck to you. My hat goes off to you--I highly respect any of our military people.

Why not? I'm sure I've seen worse.

Sally C,

You have proof of this, I'm sure? I know people in the military who can think circles around your 'intellectual superiority', candy a**.....
