I like cards, would rather have them. I like buying them, too, much better than a present! I have an Aunt, who lives in a small town, there is a competition [informal, no prizes] about who gets the most birthday cards. My Aunt comes close, with eighty something a couple of years ago.
How cute! Bunch of old ladies getting together, and comparing cards.
I keep my cards until the next year, and make a list, so I can reciprocate, if I wish. One of the local nursing home recycles the picture off of them, if I could just remember to take them out there.

I would love to receive a card that omeone has made or thoughtfully picked out - rather than a gift that they picked up on the way over that I would never use just to give me a "gift" for my birthday. I always keep cards that friends and family have written something meaningful inside.

Cards are generic these days, they mean nothing other than you have 50 pence to spend or a pound.
I don’t give cards out unless I know the person will be offended if they don’t receive one. (Grandmother) I never buy my parents a Birthday Card, Fathers Day card, or Mothers day card. It is a waste of natural resources.
I wouldn’t be hurt if someone didn’t get me a card. It is nice in our younger years but I think there comes a time when it is useless, they’re all chucked in the bin a couple of days afterwards. Spend that extra pound on another gift or pocket it.
50 pence bag of wine gums will do me.

i find recieving a card more important than a gift, i always remember that the person sending the card may not have the money for a gift. and its better to be thought kindly off other than not at all.

Deffinitely cards! It's nice to know people are thinking of you. One year I only got 2 cards, one from my dad and one from my daughter, I have 3 kids all grown up and a husband. I tried not to let it show but as the next birthday came around I got a bit down and my second daughter asked why. That year I got loads of cards, they all got there friends to send me one, it was really nice!

You can't control what people give you. If you receive lots of cards, treasure them as much as gifts. Whether you receive cards or gifts you will have to reciprocate in the future anyways.

Cards are nice, but a gift is better. I think it depends on the person too, if they are a little picky and materialistic then maybe the gift is a better option.
