Us Latter Day Saints believe in the family unit. It was commissioned by God in the beginning and has not changed. When there is strife within the family, it is up to them to work things out. Unfortunately, some Mormon families come to these situations when a member either leaves the faith or refuses to be baptized due to the lack of inspiration they expect to get from the Holy Ghost to tell them if the Book of Mormon is true. With that, some members of the family tend to get so upset that they mistakenly disown that family member. We are taught to forgive our enemies of all the things they do to us, yet we treat some of our family worse by not forgiving them. They forget that Heavenly Father loves all his children just the same and play no favorites. If a child does something wrong, it is punished. If a child does something good, then it is rewarded. These family members that disown their children or siblings because they decide to leave the church are failing the commandments that Christ spoke of in the Gospels. He has also warned that those who do not forgive, the greater sin is upon them. I hope this answers your question to the fullest.
P.S. Not all Mormons disown family members because they leave the faith.

I am a mormon considering leaving the church, and that is one of my main fears. It shouldn't happen, but I know it does. However, in the end someone should do what they feel is right, regardless of how their family will react.

Yes they are encouraged to. In 2013 the church produced a video encouraging member to disinherit their wayward children and give all of the their inheritance to the church.

Its all up to the family. My sister left the church for years and no one ever lost contact with her or pushed her away, she was always just as welcome to anything before as she was after. if anything you should tell your Mormon family members that it would be expected of them to be open to what they are feeling. Sadly its the family in this case, not the religion.

I would not disown family members, this is counter-productive. Nevertheless, some people do stupid things and disown others.

No. They have their agency. We can't use anything but love and understanding.

I guess it depends on how and why they left the church doesnt it. Maybe they deserve to be hung up on?
