as opposed to the slavery of the western woman to the ideal image which is constantly bombarding her through commericals and media that she should be thin and half naked to be considered beautiful....that the body of a woman is used to sell everything from cars to laundry soap, that the western woman must work twice as hard to get the same or even close recognition as her male counterpart....
i dont advocate the complete veil even though I am a muslim,,,its not required in Islam, but if a woman wants to wear it than more power to her, but if she is forced to by culture then I am against it completely....however to say its the only form of slavery against women out there is a total lie and your blind if you think otherwise.
slavery can come wrapped up in a beautiful box that says size 8 on it too you know...

It wasn't all that long ago that right here in "Christian" America women were property. They had no rights at all. Here in "Christian" America black people (even after they were freed from Christian condoned slavery) had no rights and had to go tho the back of the bus. They couldn't go to the same schools as the white children. Women of any color were not admitted to medical schools (or most other colleges). The list goes on.
Christianity has begun to realize (or at least accept) that it is not only white men who are humans with rights. Islam is a younger religion. They too may yet evolve to be more rational.

Oh, I thought you meant the veil some North American females wear on their wedding day.
You're right. The restaurant thing is certainly unfair. On a positive note, being restricted to a different area saves the women from hearing the men chew food or having to sit close to them and smell male body odor.

I am a Muslim woman, living in muslim country. I wonder why are non-Muslim so much insisting on giving us - Muslim women - so called 'freedom' from - ie. veil? Believe me, if you do not know the rules of islam and do not believe in God - you will not understand us. To understand us, and what we need - you have to learn first of islam, second- ask Muslim women - whether they want your help in certain aspects of our lifes. I personally do not want anyone to 'free' me from covering, as well as do not see anything wrong in eating in separate - family part of the restaurant, where special compartments allow me to uncover my face and eat in privacy, enjoying food prepared by the cook? The families sections, which can also be used by single women are a convenience for us, not a burden. More difficult for a Muslim women who cover themselves completely is to eat in 'mixed' restaurant, which does not provide them with a desired amount of privacy. Reg - single men sitting in the front of the restaurant - men do not need to cover their faces, so they can eat exposed, that is why - single men part of the restaurant if open and does not require special 'compartments'.
One more thing, if you learn more about the history of veil itself, you will see that in antient times, women whose status in society was high - were covering their faces, while slaves and prostitutes where not. So do not say - that veil - I am not saying here about religious requiremnt of islam - is a "general" symbol of slavery, because it is not - it is opposite.

it's not something that you could change singlehandedly. Like a yamaka (don't know how to spell it, but jewish male headpiece)
Being thankful for the opportunities you have is probably the first step, but it's highly unlikely that the women there would even want the freedom you have. With punishment from being a social outcast to being murdered, it's a risk that most wouldn't want to take.
Just because it's your way, doesn't make it the right way-- just the one that works in your view.

Generally, woman like to flatter their appearance, not hide it. The veil is a symbol of the problem that lies within the minds of men. Women didn't come up with this idea, men did.

If a veil is a symbol of slavery, then all who believe as such are also slaves to it, and thus untrustworthy to speak of its value.
A veil does not make one a slave, a closed heart and mind does. If one has both, no amount of veils uncovered or removed will ever free them.
Free yourself, and your freedom will do likewise to others.
