The rental company has the right to pursue whoever rented the vehicle for damages to their vehicle. It doesn't matter if you are at fault for the accident or not, you have a contract with them that says if you damage the car you will pay for those damages. Damages include not only the cost to repair the vehicle, but income that was lost as a result of the car being in the repair shop. They have the right to your insurance information and collision deductible up front, and they have the right to charge your credit card for the full cost of repairs.

You have the right to a copy of the final repair estimate and photographs supporting the estimate, as well as evidence supporting the lost income. You have the right to inspect the vehicle. You have the right to purchase insurance at the time of rental, and you have the right to decline the purchase of that insurance at the time of rental.

Did you pay for the extra collision coverage?
Does your car insurance cover rentals and 3rd party vehicles you are driving?
Then let the insurance companies work it out.

it depends on the state where the accident occurred, depends on what coverages you purchased on the rental and who was at-fault for the loss.

If you didn't pay the extra for their insurance, then it will go through your insurance company and you will be responsible for your deductible. If it was your fault then expect your insurance rates to go up.
