I need help. I have demons within me that I talk to. But they started off as imaginary friends from my childhood. Now I cannot get rid of them or stop talking to them.

I'm guessing that you can't get rid of them because they're not demons- they're parts of you. Parts that split off at a very young age.

Of course I can't diagnose you over the computer, even if I was a shrink! But what you're talking about sounds like my/our own experience as someone with multiple personalities, (now called DID- Dissociative Identity Disorder.) And like my two friends who are multiple, and the reading I've done on the subject. Have you read the questions on Dissociative Identity Disorder?

The only way to know for sure is to consult with a good therapist. One who knows what they're doing- there is still lots of cluelessness about multiplicity, even among therapists. Seeing a bad therapist could do you more harm than good.

The Sidran Foundation has a website with useful information and a therapist listing by states. Or look for therapists who specialize in trauma and dissociative disorders. Word-of mouth can help too, -our excellent therapist was recommended by a friend.

The bad news is- dealing with multiplicity can be hard, the good news is there's lots of room for healing and growth. DID is considered very treatable. Many multiple people have good jobs, happy families, interesting adventures- whatever your dreams and wishes might be.

Personally, we feel like our inner exiles have come home from the war, carrying with them fears, sadness, rage and pain. But they also carry gifts -skills and perspectives I didn't know we had. Our "other 2/3rds" are back. Though the journey has been, and sometimes still is, painful and difficult, it's also a joyous family reunion, with lots of love. More love than I knew was possible. It's definitely been worth it.

Best of luck to you!

This is something I am familiar with.
Here are 2 possibilities --
Your childhood imaginary friends may be alternate personalities
(alters) with their own thoughts, opinions, skills, abilities and memories. Other symptoms would also be present, if this is the case. This is called DID or dissociative identity disorder / formerly called multiple personality disorder MPD. This is not necessarily something to be fearful of, it is an alternate method of coping with life's difficulties for some people who posses a high intelligence. There is a cure - involving a qualified experienced therapist, work toward joining these separate personalities into your core personality, becoming ONE, and not segmented in skill and memory.

The second possibility I am also familiar with. Demons are real - they can appear to children as protectors or friends or as evil beings. Some people are extra sensitive toward these spirit beings present in our world, they can see them and hear them. Usually they would be introduced by a person who is involved with "spirits" or "evil spirits". Some people have been known to posses one or more of these "evil spirits" or "demons" within their body, which can have supernatural knowledge or power or physical strength or super-human anger and evil exuding from their body, yet later have no memory of the event. There is a cure. "Exorcism" for a Man of God to expell the spirit with God's power.

I have worked with many people in the health care field. It sounds like you have what we used to tell patients, "they have a little man in their heads", and if this is the case, you need help. It sounds like you are hearing voices. So go to a doctor and get help!

You need to go get some professional help. Ask your doc for a referral to a psych doc who can help you.
