It's a socio-economic thing that's not really particular to just Blacks.

Low-income people of all races generally don't drink wine, for a wide variety of reasons that are too vast to go into in this discussion.

But people with disposable income do drink wine, b/c they can afford that luxury. They normally aren't drinking to get drunk, they're purchasing something they enjoy. If you don't have a lot of money, chances are you won't buy something unnecessary like wine. You'll buy pop. If you want alcohol, you'll buy cheap beer or bottom shelf liquor. Wine is a luxury good.

They do, but it's mostly the cheap stuff like Mad Dog 20/20, Thunderbird and Ripple.

Actually that applies to anybody in the lower socio-economic strata and has no bearing on the colour of their skin. It has more to do with money than necessarily they don't like it. I mean look how Cristal has been whored out by the rap and hip-hop community, obviously they happen to like it although that might be simply a sign of how expensive it is.

I would say that the wines they could afford are all really nasty and that might play a role in it. Who in their right mind would want to drink Franzia if it wasn't so cheap? I took a sip of that stuff once and haven't ever touched it again. It was simply vile yet college kids drink it like it was going out of style. Co-incidence? I think not. If they had the money to buy a better wine they would.

Also, wine in many cases is seen as a higher class drink while beer and malt liquor are more "working class" drinks. They might simply not drink it for that reason.

And finally, wine to many can be intimidating. They simply don't know which ones are good and are afraid to look stupid or ignorant when choosing one. So they leave it up to somebody else, or simply go with what they're comfortable with.

that's a dumb question honestly. what makes you think they they don't drink wine?? That's like saying why don't Japanese people drink milk, or why don't Mexican people drink vodka. Honestly think about it....how exactly did you come to this conclusion? Now if you want to say that MOSTLY WHITE(Caucasian) PEOPLE OR EUROPEANS DRINK WINE you would be more correct. Well maybe...It is possible to think this. maybe because wine has been so popular in Europe for so many centuries. As for Americans? I dint know who drinks most wine. Maybe white people (white of all kinds not just "Americans") it could be a cost issue. It could be because of where they are raised..low income. I cant exactly say that's for sure. I grew up low income but I drink good wines now. It might just be SOME low incomes neighborhoods. who knows. But its silly to say BLACK (yes i said black..most people i know who are "African Americans"..they hate the term) don't drink alot of wine. I get the feeling that in black neighborhoods they don't advertise fine wine as much as beer or hard alcohol.

Ahhh! Sad that a couple answerers would use a food forum to be so ignorant!

But for the most part, I agree w/ answerers Iammaurer & Dont4get2loveme.

I think your question makes a false assumption...and you clearly haven't been exposed to African-Amer professionals who are wine collectors & enthusiasts.
