People who fail to respect themselves may cheat when they are also selfishly becoming morally deficient and come in contact with another selfish morally challenged person.
In a perfect world, cheaters, except in their fantasy dream, would have no chance to exist because the person they are wanting to cheat with would voice an emphatic "NO, you are involved with another."

This is not as simple a question as it appears.
First we need to understand what is cheating. In my mind, cheating is when two people have entered into a monogamous relationship and have agreed to remain sexually exclusive. Unless that agreement exists you cannot really cheat. I don't understand how you can really cheat on a boyfriend or girlfriend unless that commitment has been made and if it has been made then you are effectively married anyway.
Under those conditions the only reason that a person could decide to cheat is that they either no longer accept that the commitment they made is binding or they place no value in that commitment and do not care what the other person feels or thinks. Once this mentality is in place the person does not regard what they are doing as cheating, just making free choices.
The objectionable part in my mind is that when one party to the commitment decides it should be set aside the other party should be informed and made aware of that before anything happens. The real cheating is when someone unilaterally sets aside the agreement and act independantly while still holding the other party to the agreement or at least letting them think the agreement is still in place.
Prevention is only really possible by honesty and communication. It would not stop someone finishing a relationship but it should at least make both sides understand where the relationship is going.

I believe that this question can only be answered by a person actually cheats. Girl or guy it doesn't matter both cheat. The only difference is that women are more discreet. I have no ideas as to what triggers cheating but I can tell you how you could try to prevent it. I was married for eight yrs, what I used to do is not to put myself in certain predicament. Especially, my ex-wife female friends because they are the first one to try to get you into bed. In order to prevent cheating, the only advise I can give is to have your partner as your best friend and keep in mind " when you cheat you hurt the one you love" and it not fair to play with people's emotion in that manner.

I suppose it is the excitement of another person actually showing interest in you. I don't know how you'd prevent your partner from cheating, but open communication might be the best way to start so that any issues come out in the open.

maybe one is not happy with the other person or the relationship and unfortunately someone came along that give that person the attention that he/she is longing from his/her partner. It can be prevented if the couple have an open line of communication and continous love and attention. and be contented with what you have, because it take some guts to cheat on someone.

TRUST, believe in every word he or she say. Its a start if u keep doubting u wont find any answer at all. While trusting don't just sit there and believe, believe and keep catching all the word he or she is talking
Body Language play the main role, scratching hair, eyes movement, hands crossing, legs crossing, nose scratching
Good Luck Detecting ^^

For you to cheat you have to either not have a heart. Or just not pleased with the relationship. It also may be that you can not talk in the relationship. You should be able to talk all the time no matter what.

It has to do with the person you are with...simple as that! If they really loved you, the temptations would be automatically nilled, from their own desires...YOU DON'T HURT THE ONE YOU LOVE. YOU WILL ALWAYS WANT WHAT IS BEST FOR THEM.
MOST PEOPLE THAT CHEAT, BECAUSE THEY CAN AND BECAUSE THEY ARE IN LOVE WITH THEMSELVES! SATISFYING THEIR DESIRES ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO THEM. Sure, they can like the one they are with, but I guarantee you, they do not REALLY LOVE YOU!
LOVE HAS TO DO WITH HOW YOU FEEL WHEN YOU ARE WITH SOMEONE...IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT YOU.
If the relationship is not equal in love, one will cheat.
