If you will attend NYU, you should live in Brooklyn. It's really fast, safe and convenient to commute with the subway. In Brooklyn, you get more square footage per $!

Brooklyn is cheaper than Manhattan.

its not as well connected by the subway system, but if you're in an apartment, it shouldn't be bad. A lot of apts are set in central locations becuase ppl need to commute to manhattan (like you)

I'm hoping someone can tell you which are of Brooklyn is both safe and exciting. here's a list of brooklyn incase you find it helpful...

Bath Beach Bay Ridge Bed-Stuy Bensonhurst
Bergen Beach Boerum Hill Borough Park Brighton Beach
Brooklyn Heights Brownsville Bushwick Canarsie
Carroll Gardens Clinton Hill Cobble Hill Columbia-Waterfront
Coney Island Crown Heights Cypress Hill Downtown Brooklyn
Dyker Heights East Flatbush East New York Flatbush
Flatlands Fort Greene Fort Hamilton Gerritsen Beach
Gowanus Gravesend Greenpoint Kensington
Manhattan Beach Marine Park Midwood Mill Basin
Park Slope Prospect Heights Prospect Park South Red Hook
Sea Gate Sheepshead Bay Sunset Park Williamsburg
Windsor Terrace

GOod luck with NYU.

I am going to be a sophomore at NYU this fall. I live in Brooklyn. Last year i did live in the dorms but i did not like it very much. I really, really like living in Brooklyn. It is sooo much cheaper than Manhattan. If you dont mind the commute to campus, which from my apartment is not bad at all, then i definitely suggest Brooklyn.

it's hard to tell what you mean by "urban, fast..." etc. but it sounds like you would be quite at home in the crowded parts of manhattan, e.g. east village, soho, etc. as noted above, these are also the neighborhoods closest to NYU's campus...the closer you live to school, the easier it will be to live spontaneously, e.g. take a nap between classes, run home to change clothes before meeting your classmates for dinner, etc. the minus obviously is price -- living in manhattan, esp. the popular parts, is hellaciously expensive -- and it's not just rent, everything costs slightly more in manhattan, so you'll feel it on food and everything else you buy in the neighborhood. the nyu dorms are themselves expensive for dorms, but you can't beat the location or the density of nyu students for company.
if you lived in brooklyn, you'd want to be in one of the relatively "hip" neighborhoods with lots of coffee shops, bookstores, people on the street, etc....possibly park slope, smith street, or fort greene...each of these would be a 20-30 minute subway ride to NYU's main campus...but these areas tend to have a slightly older crowd (recent college grads to 30's) and housing is still pretty expensive...it's just that you'll get a little more space for your $. it might make sense for you to start out in manhattan and move out to brooklyn later in your several years of school.

do your research on newyork.craigslist.org (apartment prices), www.mta.info (subway and bus routes), and whatever nyu student bulletin boards you can find.

good luck.

I live in Brooklyn and my roommate is a grad student at NYU. It's very convenient.

well NYU has housing, if not there, then live in the east village /lower east side. great place for younger people to live and you'll be right there by the campus.

Brookly is nice but you will spend too much time commuting. That can be exhausting. Get the closest place to your college and save the wear and tear on your body It is going to be four longs years.
