that is a cheap price for a VW bug that still runs they usually start at 1500 and up and it is now a classic car so therefore it's value goes up the older it is

Depends on what 'a lot of work' covers.

If the frame and body are ok without any RUST.. (look in the door jams at the base) or body rot (look at the fender welts) or rotted floor pan (pick up the rear seat and look under the battery

If you can drive it on the freeway without the front end shaking or rattling (bad joints, bushings, or steering damper)

The engine can be rebuilt and replaced for under $1000 but it would be nice if it was not leaking oil and smoking like a coal plant chimney.

Lastly, the trans axel should shift smoothly and downshift without and excessive grinding.. Starting uphill the car should accelerate with the engine (if the engine races the clutch may be bad or the main seal may be leaking oil on the clutch plate)

Those are some basic guidelines to problems that can be potentially very hard to deal with (especially rust on the door jambs and frames ).

If you can get past these then $600 is prob. a good top end price.. unless it is a convertible and then it is a runaway steal.

It is definitely worth $ 600/-!
I bought an excellent and very original 1972 VW Beetle 1302S (Super Beetle - 1600cc) last October for the approximate equivalent of US$ 3,000/- (in my currency), which I still consider a bargain. So even if you spend a lot to get it back into original condition, it is fully worth it.
It is a very easy and fun car to drive, and also fairly simple and cheap to run and maintain.

Yes, Buy one thing you should check is end play on the motor. To do this put the car out of ger, motor cut off. Take the big black pulley on the motor push it in towards front of car, pull towards rear of car. If it moves a 1/16 inch or more the motor needs major machine shop work.

It very well could be. First of all what kind of work does it need. Does it turn over? Hows the body? Considering aftermarket parts are relatively inexpensive, and in supply, yes I think it probably is worth 600.00. The motors are even inexpensive. The old " pancake" air-cooled motors are easy to work on, they are high maintenance, but all the parts are easily interchangeable, and upgradeable, and easy to modify. They're also easily restorable

Sure. If you only sell parts it would be worth far more. A rebuild-able engine would cost almost that. Not to mention the trans axle.

Get a J.C. Whitney catalogue for parts or price comparison.

Yes...but check the pan and body for rust before giving the money to the seller.

Depends on the body and the interior mainly. If it is good enough for you, it is worth it to you.
