I just went through this trying to get my dad's military records and reasons for his receiving certain medals. You can check out
http://vetrecs.archives.gov
and the site will walk you through the procedure.
Good luck!

You can contact the Army. They may not be able to provide complete records though depending on how old they are. The medals you will probably have to shop ebay.
My dad's medals disappeared several years ago but the Marine Corps could only provide service dates. Good luck. I am sure your dad will appreciate whatever you can come up with. I know. I was supposed to get my dad's Sabre but it was stolen too. My wife purchased a replica for me. Not the same but I like it anyway.

I used the usamilitarymedals.com site to find information on the different medals that my uncle had been awarded. Check out this URL...
