A 2.5 is a 2.5 liter displacement 4 cylinder engine. A 3.5 is a 3.5 liter displacement engine and it is a 6 cylinder engine. The 3.5 gets far better performance than the 2.5 (horsepower, acceleration, etc.). The 2.5 gets slightly better fuel economy. Both engines are available in the Altima and the Frontier.

The engine size. The 2.5 means a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine. The 3.5 means a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder engine. The 3.5 is a more powerful engine of the two.
