In general, it is a person or persons who do not believe in the conventional way. Like, atheism, put the earth higher on the pecking order than human..stuff like that.

The word can be used in different ways. Some use it to refer to anyone not participating in one of the three big monothesitic religions. That's the most general term.
More specifically it refers to people who do participate in religions, traditions, or philosophies that are based on ancient ideas and practices as well as we can understand them (and as practically as possible).
PS in ancient Roman times it referred to the people who lived in the countryside, ie 'hicks'. But who is more likely to revere nature than those who live in it?
