i asked this question a long time ago..when I was confirmed everyone in my confirmation class wore a white gown..they told me it was because some people could not afford a suit of clothes and some could ..so they rented white gowns to equal everyone out..also a choir looks more uniform if they all dress alike..like in the Army?
High school and college graduations are the same way..gowns ..some people don't want to wear a suit..or maybe they just want to look uniform..

For some reason, singing groups feel the need to dress alike so you know that they are part of the same group (as if you can't tell them when they are up in front of the others). I've sung in music groups and choirs, and it's something you expect to do.

They are called vestments not dresses.

The point is to minimize individuality so that people do not pay attention to the individual singer because of their five mile orange miniskirt, hence not paying attention to worship.
